In Kenya, most individual coffee farmers lack the resources to process their own crop. As a result, farmers create cooperatives together and operate centralized mills where individuals can bring the coffee and be paid for the cherries without having to worry about the expense and complexity of processing the seeds and drying them. As a coffee roaster, we try to find cooperatives that are producing consistently sweet and vibrant coffees. Gathaithi mill and Farmer’s cooperative society has over 1,100 members and collectively produce over 200,000 pounds of coffee every year, and we chose a lot of their peaberry (if you’re not familiar, peaberry coffee occurs when one small, round seed forms inside the coffee cherry instead of two larger seeds side-by-side) this year for our Kenyan offering. Kenya-lovers rejoice; it is bright, sweet and has the quintessential “Kenya” quality you love.
