THE KIRORERO WASHING STATION SERVES OVER 2000 SMALL-HOLDING FARMERS IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE OF RWANDA, 40% OF WHICH ARE WOMEN PRODUCERS. THE TINY COUNTRY OF RWANDA CONTRIBUTES ABOUT 0.2% OF THE WORLD’S COFFEE SUPPLY, BUT IS INCREASINGLY BEING RECOGNIZED FOR COMPLEX AND DELICIOUS SPECIALTY COFFEE. AN ACCOMPLISHMENT MADE EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE BY THE FACT THAT COFFEE PRODUCTION WAS DEVASTATED BY THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE IN 1994. SINCE THE EARLY 2000s, COFFEE HAS BEEN A VEHICLE FOR THE REPAIR AND RECOVERY FOR MANY FAMILIES.
